Sports & Recreation

Preventing chronic disease through sports and physical activity is one of the aims of the Anyinginyi Sports and Recreation Unit.

The Unit was established in 1991 and provides a number of services to residents of the Barkly Region, including an after-school and school holiday sports program, a fully equipped gymnasium, with group fitness classes and our comprehensive social sports calender, facilitated by the Sport and Rec staff members to the Tennant Creek Community. The Anyinginiy Sport and Rec team also has the use of the referral system by other sections with Anyinginyi which has seen a more holistic approach to health care and improvement of clients health and overall wellbeing through physical activity.

Anyinginyi is one of the only Aboriginal Medical Service to run a fully functioning gym, and for this we are extremely proud. We are also linking in more with local community organisations to provide specialised support for community members wishing to utilise the gymnasium and other facilities, to encourage people to get fit, and linking it in with nutritional advice through Anyinginyi's nutritionist.

One of the most popular programs is the After-School sports program which sees children each afternoon playing structured games such as basketball, dodge ball, netball, soccer, cricket, T-Ball and Hockey. The Anyinginyi sport and rec team also partner with national sporting bodies to deliver in2cricket, NetSetGo, Aussie Hoops and Mini Roos to the Tennant Creek community.

The other major activity is use of the gymnasium, in which 2 years ago major renovations were completed for the gymnasium by installing air conditions, adding extra rooms and is now a fully functional commercial gymnasium, with a range of weights, cardio and other machines to help keep clients active and healthy.

Sport and Rec also run group fitness classes to members early in the morning, covering activities such as circuits, cross fits, indoor cycle, pump and women only classes.

In the past couple of years, Anyinginyi faciliatates roughly 12 social sporting compeitions to the community, ranging from 6-9 weeks in a team base environment. Social sports such as Touch Football, Cricket, Volleyball, Netball, Soccer, Softball and Basketball are organised throughout the year in either womens competitions or mixed.
